Perched in one of Wellington Harbour’s most prominent locations, Point Dorset offers exceptional views and a rich history, having once been home to Fort Dorset, a military battery built in the early 1900s. When the site was prepared for subdivision in the early 2000s, it presented a rare opportunity to create a home that could fully leverage its stunning setting.

HWA was commissioned to design a four-bedroom residence tailored to our client’s lifestyle: a home that would combine everyday living, work, and entertaining in a seamless, functional, and elegant way. The narrow, tall site presented a unique challenge, which we met by designing long, vertical volumes both internally and externally, creating a sense of grandeur and space throughout.

Living areas are positioned to maximize harbour views, with a scullery kitchen, gym, wine cellar, guest bedrooms, and theatre room on the lower levels, and the master suite and home office above. Double-height spaces enhance light and connectivity, while careful planning ensures privacy and long-term comfort.

From the outset, the clients encouraged us to explore creative solutions, with a focus on capturing the site’s assets, supporting a love of entertaining, and accommodating their careers. Their input was integral in selecting materials for both exterior and interior finishes, including the striking combination of imported bluestone and limestone cladding contrasted with Specialized EZ-Panel.

The result is a highly visible yet private home, with a contemporary interior, low-maintenance finishes, and spaces designed for both living and entertaining. Point Dorset is a residence that balances style, functionality, and a strong connection to its remarkable site.
