FIRST STEP ENGAGEMENT

Hamish - HWA

you don't need to know where to start

That's what the First Step Engagement is for.

Bring me your idea, your site, a property you're considering, or simply the sense that you're ready to do something.

We'll talk through what you're trying to achieve, identify the questions that matter, and work out the most useful next steps.

start with the project as it is

You don't need drawings. You don't need a builder. You don't need a finished brief or a detailed understanding of the building process. All you do need is a project, an idea, or something you're ready to explore.

You might be considering a new home, wondering whether an alteration is realistic, looking at a property with potential, or trying to make sense of advice you've already received.

The First Step Engagement gives you direct access to more than 20 years of architectural experience before you commit significant time or money to a direction.

We'll start with what you know, identify what you don't, and work out what needs to happen next.

HOW IT WORKS

From the first conversation, I shape my involvement around the support your project needs.

FOUR STEPS. ONE CONNECTED PROCESS.

01

Tell me about your project

Complete the short enquiry form at the bottom of this page, or email me and send through anything useful. A property address, photos, plans, a real estate listing, or simply a description of what you're considering.

02

I'll review what is available

I'll look at the project and available information before we meet so our time can focus on the questions and decisions that matter.

03

We meet and talk it through

Usually at the property where appropriate. We'll discuss what you're trying to achieve, explore the possibilities, and identify likely constraints, opportunities, and specialist advice.

04

You'll know what to do next

I'll explain the likely pathway and the next decisions to make. If further work is needed, I'll tell you what I recommend and why.

Most projects start with the same five thoughts

After more than 20 years working with clients, I've found that most first conversations begin in much the same place. The project might be completely different, but the uncertainty usually isn't.

Can I actually do what I'm thinking?
You have an idea, but you're not sure whether the site, existing building, planning rules, or budget will allow it.

How much is this likely to cost?
You don't need a detailed estimate yet. You need to know whether your expectations and the likely scale of the project are broadly aligned.

Where do I even start?

Architect, builder, engineer, surveyor, council? The building process isn't obvious if you haven't done it before. Even the most creative builders and experienced engineers need a clear idea of what is being designed. Establishing the project, testing the possibilities, and creating a direction for others to work from is often the best place to start.

Am I about to make an expensive mistake?
You might be considering buying a property, committing to a design direction, or spending money on professional advice and want to know whether you're heading the right way.

Who do I need, and when do I need them?
Most projects involve several people. The difficult part is often understanding which advice matters now and what can wait.

If you're thinking one or more of these things, you're in much the same position as most of my clients when we first talk. That's why the First Step Engagement works so well: it's a low cost, low commitment way to get experienced advice and work out what to do next.

What it costs

First Step Engagement — Residential
$450 + GST

Includes initial project review, available information review, and a focused consultation about your project and next steps.

If the project continues with me, the engagement becomes the beginning of the wider architectural process. We don't start again.

Considering a commercial property or project?

Commercial engagements are scoped around the building and questions involved.
