HWA
Concrete Architecture
HWA Architecture provides architectural design services for residential and commercial buildings to be built from concrete, throughout New Zealand.
Designing with concrete from the outset
Concrete can offer exceptional strength, durability, thermal mass, and architectural possibilities, but the greatest benefits come when the construction method is considered early.
I help clients explore where concrete makes sense, understand the different construction options, and consider how structure, insulation, services, detailing, and construction will influence the wider project.
The aim is not to use concrete simply for the sake of it. It is to understand what the material can contribute and develop a building where the construction method supports the site, the architecture, and the way the building will be used.

For projects where durability, resilience, and long-term performance matter, concrete offers exceptional opportunities.
I help clients realise the full potential of concrete construction through thoughtful design and practical experience.
Concrete isn't a single construction method. Insulated concrete formwork, precast panels, in situ concrete, and concrete masonry each bring different opportunities, constraints, detailing requirements, and construction considerations.
Over the past 20 years, I've worked with concrete across residential, commercial, and community projects. I work closely with structural engineers, suppliers, contractors, and specialist consultants to understand which systems are appropriate and how they can be integrated into the wider design.
Concrete can be particularly well suited to exposed coastal environments, challenging sites, demanding structural requirements, and buildings where durability, acoustic performance, fire resistance, or low maintenance are important.
Used well, it can also create opportunities for thermal mass, generous spans, robust interiors, and a strong connection between structure and architectural expression.
My role is to bring those considerations together and help determine where concrete adds genuine value to the project.
From construction strategy to completed building
Projects involving concrete benefit from early coordination between architecture, structure, building performance, services, and construction.
I can become involved at the earliest stage to explore construction options, coordinate specialist advice, and understand how the chosen system may influence the design.
From there, my involvement can continue through design, visualisation, documentation, consenting, builder procurement, and construction support, with the level of service shaped around the project and the team involved.

In Progress - Paekakariki Surf Lifesaving Club
The Paekakariki Surf Life Saving Club was designed as more than a clubhouse, it is a community hub supporting lifesaving, education, recreation, and resilience. Practical planning, durable materials, and thoughtful design combine to create a building that will serve the community for decades.
