Lake Tekapo has long been a jewel in New Zealand’s landscape, and this project marks the second opportunity we’ve had to contribute to its architectural fabric. We look forward to the chance to be involved in more projects here.

Commissioned as a second home for a travelling entrepreneur, the residence was designed to accommodate a large garage for all the “toys” while creating an entertainer’s paradise on the upper levels.

The home is defined by uninterrupted views of the lake to the north, the Two Thumb Range to the east, and the Southern Alps to the west. Its form responds to the gentle south-to-north slope of the site and the strict covenants governing development.

Maximising the view and sunlight was central to the design. The master suite, for example, enjoys morning sun over one set of hills, while the owners can watch the sun set dramatically behind another mountain range.

The client’s brief was for a home that felt like an alpine retreat, inspired by Northern European villages. Within the constraints of the covenants, this warmth and alpine character were expressed through extensive use of timber and locally sourced stone, creating a home that is both inviting and contextually sensitive.

We thoroughly enjoyed working on this project and immersing ourselves in the unique landscape of Lake Tekapo.
